This Couple Turned an Abandoned Sewer Into a Home Full of Love

A Hidden Home Built With Nothing But Love

Over the next 22 years, the couple turned the dark, cold tunnel into a warm and functional home. They built routines. They fought their addictions. And slowly, they added comfort—piece by piece.

Inside, the space is divided into separate areas for cooking, sleeping, and storage. Miguel built shelves and walls using salvaged wood and materials. A small kitchen corner holds a camping stove, some cookware, and dry goods.

They even have lighting—installed legally through a local charity.

Clothes hang on wires. Their bed, though simple, is warm and clean. A curtain separates it from the entryway. On a makeshift table sit framed photos and drawings—gifts from neighbors and local volunteers who’ve heard their story.

“It may be underground, but this place has more peace than any high-rise,” Maria once told a visiting social worker.

They keep it tidy. They care for each other. And they’ve learned to live with less—and love it more.
